Hydrostatic Testing

• Fire Extinguishers

• Fire Fighting Air Packs

• Aircraft Oxygen Cylinders

• Oxygen, C25, CO2 Cylinders

• Medical Oxygen Cylinders

• Nitrogen Cylinders

• SCUBA Tanks

Hydrostatic testing uses water under pressure to measure the strength and flexibility of the cylinder's walls. The test is required every five years or when the cylinder has been structurally weakened through impact damage or tumbling. Tanks should be hydro-tested or even condemned if exposed to high heat.

Cylinders are given a thorough internal and external visual inspection. The cylinder is filled with water and placed inside a water-filled, high-pressure container. High-pressure water is injected into the cylinder to cause the cylinder to expand. Pressure is held steady for 30 seconds to make sure the cylinder has reached, and can maintain, full expansion. In most cases a cylinder passes if its permanent expansion after the test is less than 10 percent of that measured during the test. If the cylinder passes the hydrostatic test, it is stamped with the current month and year. Hydrostatic test results are kept on file. If the cylinder fails, it may not be refilled.
